Deering High School senior Lukas Bean-Wodka was recently recognized by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana for his volunteer work and being a role model.

The recognition took place at the board’s Oct. 18 meeting.

Lukas is currently attending his second year in the Culinary Concepts Program at PATHS (Portland Arts and Technology High School). Botana read the following statement about Lukas’ accomplishments:

Lukas worked this past summer with the Portland Public Schools on the Summer Meals Program, which provides free lunches to children at multiple sites throughout Portland. Food Services staff reported that Lukas was a joy to work with.

Although Lukas has interest in design/new media, he sees his culinary skills as a way to provide for himself while he is working on his design-career goal. Lukas is exemplary at taking the skills he learned at PATHS, under Chef Douglas Armstrong, and directly putting them to use in his current work setting.

In addition to his culinary studies, Lukas is an energetic member of the Deering Drama Club. He is a hard-working student and excellent at applying what he learns to practical situations. He sees the value in thoughtful conversation and communication with peers and coworkers. Lukas is a role model to his peers and we applaud him for his dedication to the school district and the Portland community.
