Casco Bay High School is holding a Haunted Walk fundraiser at the school on Thursday, Oct. 27, to help 11th-graders go on their Junior Journey.

The 5:30 to 8 p.m. event, designed for all ages, features a guided tour through the “spooky” woods and fields behind the school at 196 Allen Avenue, and various activities and cider. The suggested donation is $5.

“But this is a "fun"-raiser as well as a fundraiser, so please, come and support the junior class in a way that you can,” said CBHS math teacher David Burke.

The Junior Journey sends the entire junior class of CBHS to do community service and documentary work at a selected location in the United States, a place where CBHS students will be the outsiders. It is a unique program in that the goal is for all students to go on the journey, and the work done is part of their curriculum at the school. Funding for the program is done entirely through fundraising and grants.

In past years, CBHS juniors have gone to West Virginia to build affordable housing; to Mississippi to build housing in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; and to New York City to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy; Last year, the Journey took the class to Detroit to work on recovering neighborhoods, and to create a documentary of the rebound that has begun in Detroit. The work done last year is being recognized at the National Expeditionary Learning conference next week in Detroit, and the students’ documentary will be a part of that conference.

“This year's Journey is returning to Detroit to further explore the work,” Burke said. “There is a lot of story still to tell, and a lot of manual labor to do.”
