October is International Walk to School Month and Lyseth Elementary School is using this time to launch a walk-or-bike-to-school campaign called “Footloose Fridays.” The school’s first Footloose Friday will be Friday, Oct. 14 – when school administrators will join in the healthy fun!

Lyseth Principal Lenore Williams and Assistant Principal Peter McCormack will walk different routes with students.

At 7:45 a.m., Williams will start at the corner of Washington Avenue and Ray Street, walk up Ray Street, take a right on Allen Avenue to Bramblewood, and go up Bramblewood to the Lyseth path.

McCormack will start at the corner of Garsoe and Washington Avenue at 7:45 a.m., and walk all the way down Washington Avenue to the drive leading to Lyseth and Lyman Moore Middle School.

They hope that Lyseth students who live along the way will make their way out to the main walking routes and join up with them. Parents also are welcomed!

Parents of children who don’t live near the routes the administrators are walking are invited to organize and lead a walk to school with children from their street or neighborhood.

Students are reminded to use sidewalks and paths when available, cross streets safely, and when biking, wear a helmet and follow bicycle safety rules.

Students who walk or ride their bikes to school Friday will get a sticker. The school plans to continue with Footloose Fridays until the snow falls.
