Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana recently joined students and staff from Deering High School, Lincoln Middle School and Longfellow Elementary School in participating in a kickoff of a multiyear effort to encourage families to save for college and reduce student debt.

The Finance Authority of Maine – or FAME – held the “Invest in ME 2030” rally at Deering on Sept. 30. At the event, students engaged in some fun financial education activities designed to help them think abut their future and the education they’ll need to pursue their goals.

The goal of the new initiative is to get all Maine families saving for college by the year 2030.

The initiative also includes scholarship opportunities – one student in each of Maine’s 16 counties will win a $1,000 “Invest in ME” scholarship. Go to NextGenForMe.com to learn more about the scholarships.

Also, a “Loan for ME” student loan resource was launched to help Maine families reduce student loan borrowing and become more informed borrowers. Learn more at TheLoanForMe.com.

And FAME also administers the NextGen savings account, a Section 529 college savings program. Visit FAMEmaine.com for more information.

Botana joined with Mayor Ethan Strimling, other school administrators and staff, local business leaders; and FAME staff to promote this initiative to help students. Botan said noted that the Portland Public Schools prepares students to be ready for postsecondary education and the more they can save for college, the more they can reduce student debt and be more free to pursue their career and life goals.
