Deering High School is hosting a Constitution Day webcast on the topic of immigration and the 14th Amendment. The event will take place on Friday, Sept. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. in the school’s auditorium. Deering students and teachers will be the live audience and schools around Maine will be connected online.

Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. Because this year’s Constitution Day falls on a Saturday, schools will be observing it on Friday, Sept. 16.

Webcast speakers will be Eileen Eagan, University of Southern Maine associate professor of history; Zachary Heiden, legal director of the ACLU of Maine; and Reza Jalali, USM’s coordinator of multicultural students affairs. The speakers will explore the history of immigration in Maine; how the 14th Amendment applies to and protects non-citizens in the U.S.; and how these protections relate to the real world experiences of today's immigrants. Students also will have an opportunity to share their own experiences and ask follow-up questions of the panelists.
