Alex Smith, captain of Deering High School’s debate team, was honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana at the board’s Sept. 20 meeting. Alex not only helped found the team, but under his leadership, the team’s membership has grown and it has garnered trophies.

Botana gave the following summary of Alex’s accomplishments:

Tonight we recognize Alex Smith (Deering Class of  2017) in his capacity as a debate team captain. Alex was one of the founding members of the debate team at Deering and every year he has helped Deering's team to improve. Deering's debate team has almost tripled its membership because of his efforts.  His sophomore year, Deering won its first sweeps trophy (best all around debate team at a tournament) and last year (his junior year) he helped one of Deering’s students become state champion in Lincoln-Douglas! He was their first debater who qualified to compete at the national level at the National Speech and Debate Association tournament that was held in Salt Lake City in June.

Every year, Alex has pushed to be better than he is and it has been infectious – to the benefit of all those around him. Additionally, Alex is student body president, has earned a 101.85 average, takes Deering’s most rigorous courses – currently four Advanced Placement courses – and is a contributing, respectful and mature Deering citizen.
