Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana this week announced the names of his appointees to the new Parent Partnership Policy Ad Hoc Committee, which the Portland Board of Public Education created Aug. 16 to assist in enhancing the district’s engagement with families.

Botana announced the names of the new appointees at the school board’s Sept. 6 meeting. They are:

*Chair:  Angela Atkinson Douina, Title 1 School Improvement Coordinator

* Gail Cressey, NCLB/ESEA Coordinator

* Jessica Hathaway, Hall Elementary School parent

* Lisa Whited, Lyseth Elementary School and Portland High School parent and also a member of Portland Empowered

     Empowered

* Stephanie Hatzenbuehler, member of the Portland Board of Public Education and a Longfellow Elementary School parent

* Susan Wiggin, district Clinical Social Worker and Homeless Liaison

Botana said, “I want to thank all these appointees for agreeing to take on the very important work of this committee. We all look forward to your recommendations in November.”

The school board has charged the new committee with reviewing and revising the district’s current Parent Involvement Policy and recommending a new Parent Partnership Policy to the board by Nov. 30, 2016.

The new committee also is directed to prioritize integrating elements of the Parent & Family Engagement Manifesto into the revised policy. The manifesto, developed by Portland Empowered and endorsed by the school board, is a document that outlines how the Portland Public Schools can better engage with parents and families. Portland Empowered is a project of the University of Southern Maine Muskie School of Public Service that works as a community partner, championing parent voice to improve educational outcomes for students.
