The generosity of a local family dentist erased the school lunch debt of 35 Ocean Avenue Elementary School students earlier this month.

“Dr. Kathryn Horutz called on Dec. 7 to ask for the dollar amount of students’ outstanding school lunch balances,”said OAES Principal Beverly Stevens. When Horutz learned the total was $256, she wrote a check for the entire amount. “With this act of kindness, Dr. Horutz wiped out the debt for 35 students, ranging from $2 to $51,” Stevens said. “Ocean Avenue School is deeply grateful for her generosity.”

She said that Dr. Horutz, who has an office across the street from the school, is a champion of the school in other ways, as well. “For the last several years her office staff have brought over school supplies in August.  She has also been very accommodating with her schedule to see our students or staff for urgent dental needs.”

As part of the district’s School Lunch Program, parents may pre-pay for student lunches, with either cash or check in the cafeteria or through the district’s online payments program at PayPams.com. To learn more, visit the Food Service Department’s payment information page on the district website at: http://www.portlandschools.org/departments/operations/food_service/payment_information/

Any family who needs financial assistance is encouraged to pick up a free- and reduced-lunch application at the Food Service office, or online at http://www.portlandschools.org/departments/operations/food_service/free___reduced_information/
