Students from Ocean Avenue Elementary School, King Middle School and Casco Bay High School participated in a Youth Climate Summit and Rally on Saturday, April 21, Earth Day weekend.

The summit and rally were organized by Terra Matters, a new environmental grassroots organization made up of CBHS students, King students, a King alumnus, King technology education teacher Gus Goodwin and environmental activists. The group helps to unite students and environmental organizations across the state with one common goal: to make an impact on climate change locally and empower others to do the same.

Terra Matters’ Climate Summit and Rally included students ranging from elementary to the college level. Environmental clubs from College of the Atlantic, the University of Southern Maine, St. Joseph’s College, Casco Bay High School, Kents Hill School, Scarborough High School, Friends School of Portland, and King Middle School presented their environmental local action projects at a Youth Climate Summit at USM’s Hannaford Hall. A Climate Rally immediately followed in Deering Oaks Park, with speakers and four musical acts.

Speakers at the rally included an Ocean Avenue second-grader; a King Middle School student who arrived recently from Angola; and Portland City Councilor Spencer Thibodeau, a King alumnus.  Four bands played Saturday afternoon – two made up mostly of King Middle School students and one was CBHS band.

“It was a great representation from the Portland Public Schools,” Goodwin said. “It was an incredibly inspiring day to see all of the young people who care so much and have such wonderful ideas for the future!”

Terra Matters has partnered with The New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, Maine Community Foundation, Sierra Club Maine, Natural Resources Council of Maine, Maine Environmental Education Association, 350 Maine, Project Learning Tree, Maine Audubon and young change makers around the state.
