The Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) hosted the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce in October and the United Way of Greater Portland in September. Both groups held their board meetings at PATHS and took a tour of the building to learn more about Career and Technical Education or CTE. Students in the PATHS Culinary Program also provided the visitors with an amazing spread of food!

“Over the past several years, PATHS has engaged in a focused effort to educate the public about the school and what career and technical education is and is not,” said PATHS Director Kevin Stilphen. “All CTE schools need to stay connected with local businesses and organizations to ensure that what they teach is relevant and connected to the world of work and postsecondary education. Hosting groups like the United Way and the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce are an invaluable opportunity for PATHS to educate the public about the school and to strengthen contacts with the larger community.”

Stilphen continued, “As technology advances in nearly all fields, the demand for highly skilled workers is at an all-time high. That’s why awareness and advocation for CTE is becoming more critical than ever. Collaborations with industries and professionals are a core component of career and technical education and are essential to offering our students the highest quality CTE experience possible.”

Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana said, “Paths is a great community asset, where our students are combining academic pursuits with career preparation. It is the essence of students being prepared and empowered. We’re very glad that PATHS is getting this added level of visibility.”

PATHS is a regional high school, serving students not only from Portland’s high schools but the high schools in 15 surrounding communities. PATHS offers 18 programs: automotive collision technology; automotive technology; carpentry; commercial art; culinary concepts; dance; early childhood occupations; food service; health science occupations; landscapes and gardens; manufacturing technology; marine systems; masonry; music; new media; plumbing and heating; welding technology/blacksmithing basics; and woodworking.
