This is the image for the news article titled PHS Safe after Hoax CallPortland High School was placed into lockdown for less than an hour today, Tuesday, Oct. 22, beginning at 10:20 a.m., when the Portland Regional Communication Center received a 911 call reporting there was a subject in the school with a gun.

The school resource officer immediately placed the school into lockdown and responded to the area within the school described by the caller. Several Portland Police officers were dispatched to the school and a thorough search was conducted and the school was reopened just after 11:12 a.m.

It appears this call was a hoax and there was no credible threat at the school. Police are currently working to identify the caller.

“The faculty, staff, and students did a remarkable job during this incident helping to secure their classrooms and keeping calm,” said Portland Police Lt. Robert Martin, in a press statement. “Calls like this are taken seriously until police can be sure the threat is not credible and the students are safe. The school remained in lockdown until that time.”

Police are asking anyone who has information that could assist them in this investigation to call (207) 874-8575.

Anonymous tips can be texted to 274637 (CRIMES) with the keyword “GOTCHA” plus their message, on the department website, and on the crime tip line at (207) 874-8584.
