PPS Changing Masking Policy
Posted on 03/09/2022
This is the image for the news article titled PPS Changing Masking PolicyWearing masks indoors will be optional for Portland Public Schools staff and students as of Monday, March 14. The district believes this change is safe at the present time due to continued low cases district-wide and guidance from the Maine Center for Disease Control, Maine Department of Education and our district medical advisers.

State authorities set Wednesday, March 9, as the day they are repealing their school masking recommendations. PPS decided to move more cautiously and deliberately in the transition to optional masking, considering all health and safety factors in making the big change.

The district will monitor the federal CDC COVID-19 Community Levels, state wastewater testing, and our pooled testing to determine if any district-wide or school-specific changes are necessary in our mitigation strategies. Those could include returning to requiring masking in a specific school or district-wide.

Learn more details in Superintendent Xavier Botana's letter to families on this masking policy change.
